Impulse event: Smart textile solutions for health and care

3. September, 17:00 - 18:30

Smart textiles in healthcare

In an ageing society, it is becoming increasingly important to live healthily and detect health problems early. Discover novel approaches to promoting health and performance of the human body through the integration of textiles and sensors. This event offers deep insights into the latest developments and applications of textile sensor technology in healthcare.

The program at a glance

Expert input : Textiles for health, Simon Annaheim, Empa

Dr. Simon Annaheim presents some of Empa’s developments that improve monitoring and therapy of the human body through innovative textiles. The interactions between materials and human skin play a central role in ensuring that textile-based sensors achieve the required precision and therapeutic textiles achieve the expected effectiveness. Their advanced technologies can therefore play an important role in the medicine of the future and enable a more comfortable and safer patient life.

Practical input : Practical application of smart textiles, Roland Zemp, sensomative

Roland Zemp, co-founder and managing director of the startup sensomative, provides practical insights into the progress of textile sensors and smart textiles. Since its founding in 2015, sensomative has successfully translated these technologies into market-ready products that support biomechanical applications. Using a feedback system for wheelchair users that helps relieve pressure through personalized notifications, Roland Zemp, a biomechanics graduate from ETH Zurich, will report on his experiences and the practical applications of this technology.

Activation : Steffen Heinrich, OST – Eastern Swiss University of Applied Sciences

Reverse pitching and challenge: Participants work in small groups to generate ideas.

Simon Annaheim , Empa

Simon Annaheim completed his doctorate at the Institute of Movement and Sport Sciences at ETH Zurich in 2009. After a year as a postdoc at ETH, he moved to Empa in 2011. In 2013 he took over the leadership of the research group ‘Heat and Mass-transfer’, which was renamed ‘Materials-Body-Interactions’ in 2020. The group investigates heat transport in clothing systems and mechanical interactions between skin and materials to validate textile-based sensor systems for medical monitoring. Annaheim has published over 80 research papers, presents at conferences worldwide and supervises young researchers. He leads projects in collaboration with academia, medicine and business.

Roland Zemp , sensomative

Roland Zemp is co-founder and managing director of the startup sensomative, which was founded in 2015. sensomative develops textile sensors for a variety of biomechanical applications. Roland holds a doctorate in biomechanics from ETH Zurich and, in addition to his work at the startup, works part-time as a technical employee at the Institute of Biomechanics at ETH Zurich.

Steffen Heinrich is a health scientist and one of his goals is to support seniors in long-term inpatient care to maintain their everyday abilities. In addition to suitable activation and fitness programs, knowledge of the residents’ remaining resources is also important. This knowledge is often lacking and deterioration of their physical resources is also recognized too late or not at all. If this could be changed, it would be an important step towards improving their quality of life and participation.

This event is aimed at healthcare, sports technology, occupational safety and research professionals interested in the latest developments in biomimetic membranes and textiles.
